It is with profound sorrow that Nature Tanzania announces the passing of our Founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors, John Yonazi Salehe, who departed from us on 19 June 2026.

John was the foundation upon which Nature Tanzania was built. He was a visionary conservationist, a compassionate leader, and a beloved mentor whose life’s work made a lasting contribution to biodiversity conservation in Tanzania. Today, we pause to honour his remarkable journey, his immense contributions, and the indelible mark he leaves on our hearts and on the natural world he dedicated his life to protecting.

Before Nature Tanzania became the growing organisation it is today, it began as a vision inspired by John’s deep love for Tanzania’s natural heritage. As a founder, working together with colleagues and with support from BirdLife International, he recognised the urgent need for a dedicated national organisation to champion the protection of Tanzania’s unique bird species, critical ecosystems, and community-led conservation for sustainable development.

Under his strategic stewardship as Chairman of the Board, Nature Tanzania grew from an ambitious idea into a stronger national bird and environmental conservation organisation. He brought decades of conservation expertise, professional integrity, and a broad global perspective to the organisation’s governance, helping ensure that Nature Tanzania remained focused on its mission and purpose. His influence extended far beyond the boardroom. His presence enriched Nature Tanzania and the wider conservation community in immeasurable ways.

John was a true champion of biodiversity and a passionate advocate for vulnerable species and habitats, from the high-canopy forests that protect endemic and endangered bird species to vital wetland ecosystems across the country. He understood that saving nature requires protecting species, conserving habitats, and supporting community action. He firmly believed that conservation belongs to the people. For the staff, volunteers, and partners of Nature Tanzania, John was a steady anchor. His wisdom, patience, humility, and encouraging words inspired a new generation of Tanzanian conservationists to lead with courage and commitment.

While we mourn an irreplaceable loss, we also celebrate a monumental legacy. John’s spirit lives on in every community we empower, every habitat we restore, and every bird that flies safely across the Tanzanian sky. The Board, management, and staff of Nature Tanzania extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire conservation community during this incredibly difficult time.
